Opening Our Hearts:Recap of the Past Year

"We occassionally stumble over the truth, but most of us pick ourselves up and hurry on as if nothing happened." -Unknown

This quote might seem at first to be an unusual choice for this month's focus, but it resonated with me when I read it for a number of reasons. This month, instead of focusing on one or two countries, we did a recap of the past year and the 12 countries we already covered. At the time this was decided, it seemed like a good way to share information with anyone who might have missed a particular month. But now I'm seeing that God had a bigger plan than I expected. I believe that God is calling us to slow down and focus on what we have already learned. In a society that is constantly in motion and being busy is the norm, I don't want to be in such a rush to get things done or in such a rut that I forget to stop and meditate on what God has already shared with me. I don't want to "pick myself up and hurry on" my way month after month without realizing the value of what's right in front of me. And I certainly don't want to be unaffected by what I've learned.

I admit that it's often too easy to learn about our brothers and sisters who are suffering for Christ on a Sunday morning and then get caught up in our schedules for the rest of the month. I believe that God wants us to take a break and think back on what he has already shared with us. I know that it's hard sometimes to completely open our hearts to what is happening to persecuted Christians. Often it is painful and ugly to hear about, so we build walls around our hearts to protect them from really 'going all in.' But there is a joy and peace that can only be known on the other side of the pain. Just like we can only be really grateful when we know how desperate we were to begin with (Lk 7:36-50), we can only truly appreciate what God is doing in the lives of our brothers and sisters when we fully open our hearts to sharing in their pain with them. I pray that you would use this month to look back through the countries and videos that are on this blog. Below will be some notes that I've made about the different countries that I hope will get you started. I pray that you will really open your heart to what God has to share with you. But even more, I pray that you would not walk away unchanged.
